Maria E. Despott graduated as a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) from the University of Malta in 2004. She graduated B.A. (Legal and European Studies) with first class honours, summa cum laude in 2001 and Diploma Notary Public in 2002.
Maria was awarded a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) with Merit in Commercial and Corporate Law from the University of London in 2005 after having followed a full-time course at University College London (UCL) as a British Chevening Scholar. At UCL, she specialised in EC Competition Law, The Regulation of the Conduct of Mergers and Acquisitions, Company Law, International and Comparative Insolvency Law and International Trade Law. She also attended the course on the Role of Economics in Competition Law and Practice.
She has also pursued studies in Law at the Università degli Studi di Verona, Italy during her participation in the Erasmus Programme of the European Union. Maria has participated in various local and international competitions including the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, in which she won the national rounds of the competition, the prize for Best Memorial and the opportunity to represent Malta in the international rounds of the competition in Washington D.C., USA.
Maria was conferred with the warrant to practice as an advocate in Malta in 2006 after having carried out her legal apprenticeship at Guido de Marco & Associates. She has practiced commercial and corporate law as an associate at Zammit Pace & Co Advocates throughout 2006 and joined Guido de Marco & Associates as an associate in 2007.
She also currently holds the position of company secretary of a prominent publication group of companies.
